Southern Marin Great Room Transformation
Marin “split level” houses, especially those built in the late 60s and 70s, are a little odd. No front hall. No front closet. Cathedral ceilings. Beams. Long, narrow living rooms. Kitchen wedged in behind pass-through windows. Iron railings that have seen better days. Smallish bedrooms with high narrow windows that let in no light because they back up into a hill. No flat outdoor space. No attic. No basement. No storage space. Of course not.
You know the drill. And we know how to fix it.
This particular project – the owners wish to be anonymous – was archetypal. The living room could have been repurposed as a bowling alley and the fireplace was scary (a botched job by previous owners). Both adults work at home. They wanted a very spacious home office, a redesigned fireplace with a huge TV in a niche above it, the battered wood floors refinished, the railings replaced, new roman shades, new Elfa closets in the boys’ shared room, a revised hall closet, new carpet throughout, new paint, new ceiling lighting. All in a two-week period over winter break, while the family was out of town.
Guess what? They got it. The pictures tell the story.
